Joining the Team: an REU experience

2018 is proving to be an exciting year for the STE||AR Group. We anticipate hiring more people this year to help us work on the many new projects we have received. These new rolls include positions for people who are just starting their coding career. Over the summer, the STE||AR Group will mentor an REU student participating in the CCT REU program. During their time at LSU, the chosen student will have the opportunity to research a computer science topic which relates to the broader work of the STE||AR Group.

Last summer we had the privilege to work with, Jesse Goncalves, a student who set up a RasberryPI cluster and performed scaling experiments with a small example application. You can read his account of his work in the blog post he wrote last fall. Jesse recently gave a presentation at his university which gave an overview of his experience from applying for REUs to some of the excursions he and his fellow researchers took while in Baton Rouge. We hope his presentation might inspire a few aspiring undergraduates to look for an interesting challenge over the summer. The presentation can be found here.

For those readers unfamiliar with the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU) and want to know more, you can find out details about the national initiative from the NSF’s REU web page. We hope you will be interested in joining us!
